In our Preschool and Pre-K program, children now have more freedom to choose how they explore and express their ideas.
Each morning from 9:30 to 11:00, the Magnolia and Sunflower classrooms come together for a shared learning block. Children may move between the two environments based on their interests, questions, and preferred ways of learning.
Magnolia: STEM Investigations The Magnolia classroom centers on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Children investigate how things work through hands-on materials, building, problem-solving, observation, and experimentation.
These experiences support skills such as: – Critical thinking and problem-solving – Early mathematical and scientific reasoning – Collaboration and communication – Persistence when an idea doesn't work the first time – Confidence in testing and revising ideas
Sunflower: Creativity and Imagination The Sunflower classroom gives children opportunities to communicate their thinking through expressive arts, storytelling, dramatic play, literacy experiences, and loose parts.
Open-ended materials allow children to build, design, create stories, take on roles, and represent their ideas in different ways. These experiences strengthen: – Creative thinking and self-expression – Language and early literacy development – Social-emotional skills – Fine motor coordination – Flexible thinking and decision-making
Supporting Children's Autonomy Children are capable learners who develop their own interests, theories, and ways of approaching a question. During the shared learning environment block, they can decide where they'd like to begin, what materials they want to investigate, and when they're ready to continue their work in another environment.
This autonomy doesn't mean learning is unstructured. Each classroom is intentionally prepared with materials and experiences that support development. Teachers observe children's choices, listen to their ideas, and help extend their thinking.
The shared Magnolia and Sunflower block began on August 17. It's one way our Reggio-inspired approach respects each child's individuality while providing meaningful opportunities for investigation, creativity, collaboration, and growth.
