Our Playground Grew This Summer

Our playground looks different this month, and the children noticed on the first morning back.

The bike trail is finished. Children have a real path to follow now, with turns to steer around and a loop to ride again. Riding a trike builds strong legs. It also builds patience, because someone has to wait for a turn.

Our team redid the play house outside. Children use that little house for every kind of story. One morning it holds a family. The next morning it becomes a shop, or a rocket, or a hiding spot from a friendly dragon.

New picnic tables arrived. Snack time can move outdoors now. There is something lovely about crackers and apple slices under an open sky, with a breeze and the sound of birds.

Stepping stones come next. Children will step, balance, and pick their own path across them. Each stone asks a small question of the body, and a child answers with a step. That kind of play builds balance and confidence, and it adds a bit of whimsy to the yard.

We are setting a date for a playground volunteer day. Our Rise Above families are invited to help build a mud kitchen and a sandbox. A mud kitchen is a small outdoor counter with pots, pans, and room to make a marvelous mess, where children pour, stir, and serve up pretend soup.

Outdoor spaces teach in their own way. Children move their whole bodies. They notice weather, dirt, and small living things. They invent games and sort out the rules together.
